carol-movie1

(118 min, US, 2015) Directed by Todd Haynes. Screenplay by Phyllis Nagy, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, Carrie Brownstein.

While many of Patricia Highsmith’s books from Strangers on a Train to The Talented Mr. Ripley have a gay subtext, only one (published under a nom de plume in 1952) portrays a frank love affair between two women. Director Todd Haynes (Safe, Far From Heaven) has transformed Highsmith’s story to a magnificent, visually exquisite film. Carol (Cate Blanchett) is a New York society woman of the 1950s, unhappy with her husband and her inauthentic life. When she shops for a gift for her daughter at a department store, she meets a young sales clerk (Rooney Mara), who looks at her with undisguised desire. From that moment on, their dangerous romance is never less than thrilling.

“Carol is less a movie about a particular relationship than it is a broader testament to the nobility of coming out, the struggle and dignity and value in it.”
VANITY FAIR, Richard Lawson
